India’s last polio victim offers a global ray of hope

Polio was one of the most dreaded diseases, an infectious disease that invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis and even death. It’s not so long ago in this country in the 1960’s that parents were too afraid to let their kids play in groups at the local playground. My mother, a nurse, would often recall nursing wards full of polio victims, kids left paralysed and adults in iron lungs!

Now, thanks to a our very efficient immunisation program polio has disappeared in Australia. And now there has been success in India thanks to the WHO Global Eradication Initiative …. what an amazing story. Link to story below from SMH 14/01/2014
